Background:
Michael C. Fitzgerald received his B.S. in Chemistry from Davidson College in North Carolina in 1989 and continued his education immediately thereafter at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Working with Dr. Lloyd Smith, Michael focused his thesis research on the application of Matrix-Associated Laser Desorption/Ionization to the analysis of nucleic acids. After graduating in 1994 with a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Dr. Fitzgerald accepted an Amgen Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Scripps under Dr. Steven B.H. Kent. His concentration here was on studying protein structure and function by total chemical synthesis, research he continues to pursue in Dr. Kent's lab with the award of an NIH Research Fellowship.
