The focus of the Open Access Mass Spectrometry Lab is to provide the TSRI community with direct access to mass spectrometry training, expertise and instrumentation. Researchers are trained in the use of the mass spectrometers in the facility and can perform their own experiments using these instruments.
The Open Access Mass Spectrometry Lab has several instruments available which comprise the main methods of mass spectrometry. The Agilent 1100 MSD LC/MS system is an HPLC-single quadrupole mass spectrometer which utilizes an electrospray ionization method. This instrument is particularly well suited for small molecule and peptide analysis. The Perseptive Biosystems Voyager DE MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer uses matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization to generate gas phase ions of the analyte of interest. The mass analyzer is time-of-flight (TOF). This instrument is primarily useful for the analysis of peptides, proteins and oligonucleotides.
